Having witnessed the demise of good literature in this country, I am pleased to say that a new voice has emerged, one that has overcome the bleak landscape of literary last two decades. Apart from the recent achievements of Junot Diaz (The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao) and Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything Is Illuminated), American literature has unfortunately been reduced to a pile heart of gender, finance and motivational titles. Sketches of a wandering young man is the anti-gender, anti-capitalist, the response to this trend. While it is certainly a young writer's debut, Bradley Fink potential for greatness, can not go unnoticed. The book is a compilation of four stories that reveal the author's point of view, first as a child who witnesses the human footprint in the Florida Everglades, and then as a young man who goes to Florida travel the world. In its first two stories the author evokes the tones of the south of Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor, while his clear statements from symbolism. From the beginning in its history where the sun beats, with its warm, swampy, Bradley Fink offers a business reason for the resistance of our natural world.
In history the title we see a first person account of the voyages of Bradley, or trips, as he calls them. This work, written in the form of journal entries for twenty months of travel leads in the heart of the author, and makes us empathize with him, were lost in four continents. When we meet him, is a disillusioned young man in Florida, which is tired of the materialistic culture there, and leave America in search of something more meaningful. Along the way the narrator is surfing in Canada through searches of backpacks Argentina and Peru, the soul-in Spain and Morocco, and hitchhiker through the Badlands of Africa. The story is so rhythmic and honestly said easily forget themselves to the times and the feeling of the page.
If you liked the Alchemist and On the Road, then you will certainly enjoy Sketches of a Young Man Wandering. It carries on the tradition of the travel odyssey in a new and youthful voice. The book has yet to hit store shelves but is available now at http://www.goodbookgroup.com
